Extension: A vital investment to improve lives of Nevadans

While many Nevadans might not be familiar with the name “Extension,” they are almost certainly beneficiaries of its programs. A unique county-state-federal partnership, Extension empowers farmers, ranchers, small business owners and entrepreneurs, parents, youth, seniors and communities of all sizes to meet critical challenges like adapting to changing technologies, improving nutrition and food safety, preparing for and responding to emergencies, protecting our environment, educating our youth and preparing them for college and careers, and much more. Gardening in Nevada class discusses how to garden anywhere using containers

March 19: Grow Anywhere Container Gardening — Joan Anglin and Sherry Ruth, Cooperative Extension Master Gardener volunteers, will discuss the ins and outs of creating containers from readily available materials, and growing food and flowers on a balcony or in a driveway.

March 26: Successful Vegetable Gardening — Randy Robison, Cooperative Extension Master Gardener volunteer, will share his secrets to harvesting abundant, award-winning produce from raised garden beds in our high-desert climate, including how to amend soil to help plants, crop rotation strategies to increase yields, and companion planting to discourage pests.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is offering the spring session of the Nevada Naturalist Program in Las Vegas beginning March 25 to provide a broad understanding of nature for adults interested in learning, volunteering, teaching and participating in conservation projects locally.

University teams up with Washoe Parks and Bartley Ranch to offer free series

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and their certified Master Gardeners offer “Gardening in Nevada: The Bartley Ranch Series.” The series is for anyone who wants to garden — those with big yards, small yards, or just patio or balcony space. These classes, offered in partnership with Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space, are free and run 6-8 p.m., every Tuesday, March 12 — 26, at Bartley Ranch Regional Park, 6000 Bartley Ranch Road in Reno.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in partnership with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, is offering a workshop March 21 at 14 locations statewide to train people how to properly use pesticides in controlled growing environments, such as greenhouses and nurseries.
